The Lighthouse Home Missions is a community outreach that feeds and clothes the needy. They are involved with a number of helpful organizations such as: The Hunger Action Coalition, Operation Can-Do, Gleaners Community Food Bank, The Family Independence Agency, Westland and Inkster Police and Fire departments. The mission feeds and provides clothing to over 10,000 people each year.
Lighthouse’s goal is to help the indigent to take on life in society with a new vigor, to help them to find the means to clothe and feed themselves, and to provide listings and/or referrals to agencies which provide various counseling services. The desire to be a hand up, not a hand out - is their primary focus.
During the months of January, February and March the mission becomes a "warming station" for all the area homeless. This allows them a warm place to stay overnight during the coldest months of the year.
They have many areas in which you can get involved:
- Soup Kitchen: Mon-Fri: 11a-3p - Help set-up, cook/prepare food, serve and clean-up. Come for an hour, 2 hours or stay the entire time!
- Food Pantry: Wed & Fri: 10a-3p - Come help stock the shelves of the food pantry and also distribute food to the families that arrive daily, who are in need.
- Warming Shelter Attendant – Only during the months of January, February and March. Volunteers are needed to come and sit at the mission to help supervise/serve the needs of those that are looking for shelter. Shift and hours are flexible.
