- 60% of the young women have given birth
- 40% have been on public assistance or in jail

- Mentored children are 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
- 52% less likely to skip school
- Mentored children demonstrated healthier behaviors, better relationships, confidence in school performance and increased likelihood of going to college.

Interested in mentoring a foster child? Learn more about these opportunities and how to get involved at the next Discover Mentoring class. This class will review some of the different organizations that we partner with and tips on how to mentor a child with in the foster care system.

Mentoring Opportunities
The dictionary defines a “mentor” as a “trusted counselor”, what a better way to exercise Christ-like leadership in this mission field. Mentoring opportunities through agencies in Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties: All training is provided by each agency and a minimum of one-year commitment is expected.
- Vista Maria – Dearborn Heights. A residential campus for girls ages 10-21. Female mentors for girls living on campus.
- Vista Maria: D.R.E.A.M program – Dearborn Heights A mentoring program designed for high potential juniors/seniors living in foster homes in Wayne Co. Meets every other Wednesday evening September-May. Men and women mentors needed.
- ChildHelp – Oakland, Wayne, & Macomb counties. A national/international organization providing mentoring to foster kids ages 7-21. Men and women mentors needed.
- Royal Family Kids’ Camp – Oakland County. A weeklong program for foster kids ages 7-11. NorthRidge currently partners with Brightmoor Christian Church in Novi. There are opportunities to help the entire week or just a day. Camp is usually conducted the last week in July of every year.Men and women mentors needed.
- Royal Friends’Club – Held at Brightmoor Church. This is the national mentoring program of RFKC (see above) that matches campers with camp staff. Club runs September-May of each year. Club staff (non-mentors) are greatly needed to help run a successful club! Men and women mentors needed.
