    Central Detroit Christian

Living in central Detroit is not easy.  Poverty is everywhere and rising above it all seems impossible at times.  Central Detroit Christian has come along side me in every imaginable way to help me break through and reach for more in Christ.  Through tutoring, the Christmas Store, the middle and high school clubs, and even the community garden, I’ve been able to see a different life and am making choices that are leading me toward success.

    City Mission

My family has not had the easiest time here in Brightmoor.  Most of my friends are either really behind in school or have dropped out completely.  Families are having a tough time escaping the cycle of poverty.  City Mission came along side my family with resources and education and it’s changing our future.  My tutor helped me graduate from high school and now I’m a leader in training.

    Mack Avenue Tutoring Program

When I started 3rd grade, I could barely write in sentences.  I hated sitting in class because I was scared someone would ask me to read out loud.  Then I started meeting with a tutor in the Mack Avenue Ministry and everything has changed.  Not only can I read and write, but I’m learning about Jesus at the same time.  My tutor cares about me and this program is giving me the opportunity to succeed.

Community Garden

Community Garden

In January of 2008, NorthRidge was approached by a meteorologist for DTE that DTE Energy was going “Green” and looking for interested organizations to plant community gardens on DTE properties with all harvests donated to Gleaners Food Bank. Thus, our first garden was tilled and planted in the Spring giving us almost 7,000 square feet. The garden yielded 3,011 lbs. of produce; the highest yield of all DTE gardens. In 2009, the garden was expanded, increasing the garden to 21,000 square feet – yielding 6,023 lbs of produce to feed the area hungry and homeless. In 2010, we are were able to donate 11,870 lbs of fresh produce to local food banks.

Mack Avenue Community Church

Mack Avenue Community Church

This is an opportunity to come alongside Mack Avenue Community Church (MACC) and their vision of reaching the marginalized and poor of Detroit. One of their guidelines for outreach is “Instead of giving out fish, we want our service projects in the community to teach people how to fish. Our aim is to help them in establishing their identity as image bearers of Christ.”

Prison Ministry

Prison Ministry

The Prison Ministry is offering a training/orientation to all those interested in volunteering in this ministry. Come learn how to become a pen-pal or participate in one-on-one visits with an inmate. If you sing or play a musical instrument you can join the praise and worship team that holds a monthly church service at Huron Valley Correctional Facility. There are correspondence bible studies to facilitate or you can simply join the prayer team that meet monthly to pray for this ministry. There are many opportunities to get involved.  Contact Outreach for more information

Immediate Needs

Immediate Needs

The purpose of this ministry is to provide a 30” duffel bag for children who are removed from their homes due to abuse/neglect and placed into foster care. The first day of being pulled from their home is understandably very traumatic for these children. They often leave their homes with all of their belongings placed in a black garbage bag – with the unspoken message that they and all of their belongings are no better than trash. The goal of this effort is to provide a child with a nice duffel bag filled with essential items that they can call their own and help provide comfort as they transition. Bags will be collected quarterly throughout the year.

Next Drop-off dates: May 5-6, 2012
